I have written before on keeping the “main thing the main thing.” (Most recently, Purposefuleader.org, 1-6-2026) If you are a follower of Christ, these words are especially for you. If you do not yet embrace the unequivocal joy of knowing and following Christ, keep reading. You, like those of us who follow Christ, have wasted so much of your time on matters of no consequence. Your opinion, like mine, means nothing. Opinion is not fact, and when we hold forth that our political and cultural views are sacrosanct and above reproach, unless based on scripture, we are wrong.
What matters? Eternity. A life focused on Christ’s love, His unselfish sacrifice, and sharing that with a lost world that is wasting time on silly arguments (2 Timothy 2:22-26), when the truth, God’s Truth (John 17:17), lies within reach of all. I recently heard Dr. John Lennox put it in perspective. Dr. Lennox is a scholar-in-residence at Oxford, a Cambridge-trained mathematician, philosopher, and apologist on par with C.S. Lewis. He is a prolific author and has debated the likes of Dawkins, Hitchens, and others. As I heard him say, “All of that doesn’t matter.” If we waste our time on making sure people know we are right, then we have missed God’s design and desire. We are to study the Word, profess it, and disciple others so that they know God is right. God’s truth and their salvation through Christ Jesus are available and await their decision.
For the follower of Christ, studying the Word and praying are the two most important things we can do. Over the past six years, I have developed a passion for this study, meditation, and prayer that I did not have in the prior 40 years of my walk. In a prior life, I was distracted by the world. My career, raising a family, electronic devices, and a plethora of other things vied for and won my attention. Much like Dr. Lennox, I look back on that time and realize how much time I was wasting. No more!
God has blessed me with the opportunity to study His Word daily; really study, meditate, and pray over it. This blessing made me realize that even when I was engaged in family, career building, etc., I would have had time to do the same thing if I had taken it. If I had turned off the T.V., woke up earlier, led Bible discussions at dinner, etc. Now, the times I missed, I can atone for and teach classes at a local mission, teach every Sunday at church, lead prayer meetings, visit elderly shut-ins, and share the gospel with many. You have the same opportunities. Teachers, teach as unto Christ, share the gospel. Businessmen, share with your colleagues, live your life as unto Christ. Mothers and fathers, bring that life home to your kids. Love others enough to share the most important truth (John 13:34-35).
When you make this change, be ready. As we are told in Zechariah 3:1-2, the accuser, satan, will attempt to stand in your way. He has already lost. Therefore, when friends, colleagues, family members, etc. reject you and your message, stand fast. Realize you are fighting against principalities and powers manifesting through their lack of Christ (Ephesians 6:10-13). Put on the armor of God and keep moving, studying, and speaking the Truth. Love them enough to tell them that they will not inherit the Kingdom of God in their current states of sin and apostasy (1 Corinthians 6:9-11; Revelation 21:8). In doing so, you will be the recipient of anger, misinformed cultural hyperbole, shunning, and other forms of persecution. Christ told us that it would happen. They hated Him before they hated us, and they will persecute us because they cannot get to Christ (John 15:18-25). Move on. Let God deal with their unbelief, as there are others who want to hear and respond.
Be still and know [He] is God. [He] will be exalted among the nations, [He] will be exalted in the earth. (Psalm 46:10) Don’t grow weary of doing good. Keep studying, meditating, and transforming your mind. Pray with a fervency you have never had before. Seek Him, and you will find Him. But you have to seek.
For those of you who do not know Christ as your Savior but held on to the end of this post, bless you. I pray for you. I ask God to begin removing the veil from your eyes so you can see the riches that await you in His Kingdom. Worshipping the creation rather than the creator is the evil of paganism, satanism, and all anti-Christ philosophies. They stem from the spiritual battles between the forces of satan and God’s victorious forces. This world holds nothing for you and will be destroyed in the end. Satan is a real being; hell is a real place. And they both await the unregenerate. A loving God does not consign you to that fate. The loving God, creator of the universe, has provided a way out of that death spiral through His Son, Jesus the Christ (John 3:16). Seek that narrow path today. You are never assured of tomorrow.
